
Recessed downlights, also called pot lights, remain one of the most specified fixtures for a clean, modern residential ceiling. With so many options on the market, the selection process comes down to a consistent set of criteria: purpose, size, color temperature, brightness, dimming, trim, and certification. 1. Determine the Purpose of the Fixture
Start with what the fixture needs to do in the space: general ambient lighting, focused task lighting, or accent lighting for an architectural feature. Purpose drives every other decision in the selection, including quantity and brightness.
2. Select the Right Size
Recessed downlights typically range from 2 to 6 inches in diameter. Smaller options, 2 or 3 inches, suit accent lighting or smaller rooms. Larger sizes, 5 or 6 inches, are better suited to general illumination in larger rooms.
3. Choose the Appropriate Color Temperature
Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), sets the mood of a room:
- 2700K-3000K: Warm white, suited to bedrooms and living rooms.
- 3500K-4100K: Neutral white, suited to kitchens and bathrooms.
- 5000K-6500K: Daylight, suited to task-oriented spaces like home offices and garages.
4. Decide on Brightness (Lumens)
Brightness is measured in lumens. For general lighting, aim for 600-800 lumens per fixture. Task lighting, such as above kitchen counters, may call for 900-1,100 lumens.
5. Consider Dimming Options
Dimmable fixtures add flexibility, but the driver needs to be confirmed against the dimmer at spec stage. TRIAC-compatible fixtures work with most standard dimmer switches; confirm compatibility before finalizing the schedule to avoid flickering or a limited dimming range.
6. Evaluate Trim and Finish Options
Trim and finish affect both function and the overall look of the room. Common trim styles include:
- Baffle Trim: Reduces glare, suited to general lighting.
- Reflector Trim: Enhances brightness, useful for high ceilings.
- Adjustable Trim: Directs light, suited to accent lighting.
Finish options like white, black, or metallic should be selected to match the interior scheme.
7. Confirm Energy Efficiency and Certifications
Specify fixtures with ENERGY STAR ratings for maximum efficiency, and confirm ETL or UL certification to meet safety standards.
8. Defer Layout and Spacing to the Plan
