CRI is a scale from 0 to 100 that shows how true-to-life colors appear under a given light source compared to how they'd look in natural daylight.
Why CRI Matters
- Color Accuracy: When the CRI is high (close to 100), a light source renders colors close to how they'd appear in natural light. At a lower CRI, certain hues can look faded or take on an off tint.
- Everyday Comfort: In a residential or commercial interior, good color rendering makes a space feel more resolved. A warm beige wall that looks washed out under certain bulbs is a CRI issue, not a paint issue.

How CRI Is Measured
Most manufacturers follow a standardized procedure to determine CRI. The light is shone on a set of color samples with known qualities, and the appearance of those samples is compared against a reference light source, commonly daylight or incandescent light, at the same color temperature. The closer the tested light's rendering to the reference source, the higher the CRI score.
The classic test uses eight color swatches, known as TCS (Test Color Samples). Some modern assessments go further and include additional samples, like R9, which focuses on deep reds, a challenging hue for many LEDs and fluorescent sources to reproduce accurately.
CRI Scores in Context
- 90-100: Excellent. Suited to photography, art galleries, high-end retail, or any application where color fidelity is essential.
- 80-90: Good. A common range that satisfies most residential and office requirements.
- Below 80: Colors can appear noticeably off, which may be acceptable for simple outdoor fixtures or applications where exact color rendering isn't critical, but it falls short where vibrant, accurate color matters.
CRI Versus Other Lighting Metrics
- Lumens: Measures brightness, not color accuracy. A bulb can be extremely bright and still have a poor CRI.
- Color Temperature (CCT): Describes how warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish) light appears, typically labeled in Kelvin (K). CCT and CRI are separate measurements; a light source can be warm white and still have a high or low CRI.
- TM-30: A newer color fidelity measure that goes beyond CRI and breaks down color performance in more detail. Where a TM-30 rating is available, it offers a more nuanced view than CRI alone.
Real-World Examples
- Residential Lighting: In a living room or bedroom, fixtures around 80+ CRI generally keep colors lively enough for daily use, from furniture upholstery to a painting on the wall.
- Office and Commercial Spaces: Offices targeting better productivity often specify lighting in the 80-90 CRI range. In retail, especially for clothing or groceries, higher CRI improves how appealing products look.
- Specialized Environments: Art studios, photography sets, and medical examination rooms typically specify 90+ CRI, since subtle color differences can be critical to the work.
Specifying High-CRI Lighting
- Check the Spec Sheet: If a fixture doesn't list its CRI, or the figure is vague, that's often a sign the CRI runs on the lower side.
- Weigh the Application: For color-critical work, like painting or design review, specify 90+ CRI fixtures. For a hallway, 80 CRI is often sufficient.
- Look Beyond CRI: CRI is a useful metric, but flicker rate, luminous flux, and color temperature all factor into how a space ultimately feels.
